Safety Requirements In Sewer Maintenance

Safety is an important issue in the Division of Sewer Maintenance. All personnel who work in the public right-of-ways are required to wear certain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

At a minimum, employee PPE /includes:

  • Hard Hats
  • Safety Vests or T-shirts
  • Steel Toed Safety Footwear
  • Goggles or Eyewear
  • Ear protection

Hard hats are required in all construction and work environments. They protect against head injuries out in the work place. The orange vests or T-shirts are designed to increase our visibility to the general traffic

The T-Shirts may only be worn during the day, the safety vests have highly reflective stripes giving them greater visibility day or night. Please keep an eye out for our guys!

All of our employees also wear steel toed work shoes, which must meet the ANSI safety requirements. These shoes have greatly reduced the possibility of foot injuries due to heavy equipment and tools falling.

Safety goggles or some sort of protective eyewear is required in certain situations where there is the possibility of flying particles becoming embedded in the eyes and causing eye injuries.

Ear muffs or ear plugs are required whenever work is being done around loud noises. This is to help protect the hearing of the employees.

All of the above mentioned safety equipment is provided by the Division to ensure that each employee has the proper protection when on a job site.
