Frequently Asked Questions of the Water Department

Q- My swimming pool contractor told me that the City of Dayton Water Department would credit my sewer charges if I will fill my pool with my garden hose. Is this true?

A- The Water Department does not credit sewer charges for filling swimming pools. Water Engineering issues fire hydrant permits to fill pools. Charges are based upon the volume of the pool.

  • $80 for up to 20,000 Gals.
  • $150  for 20,000 - 50,000 Gals.
  • $220 for 50,000 - 75,000 Gals.
  • Established by Water Engineering when over 75,000 Gals.

Q- I have a high water bill. Would it be possible to get an adjustment?

A- If you had a leak, and the water didn't enter the sanitary sewer, then we will credit the sanitary sewer portion of the bill only. Examples of this situation would be a broken pipe under slab or a leak in a basement with a dirt floor.

Q- I have a leak in my yard. Will the Water Department repair it?

A- We only repair from the water main to the property line. After the service crosses the property line, maintenance becomes the responsibility of the landowner.

Q- My meter hasn't been read for sometime. What should I do?

A- We require that every meter be read at least once (1) every nine (9) months. You can contact Water Revenue at 333-3550 to set up an appointment to have your meter read. You may also register a key at Water Revenue at City Hall to allow the meter reader access to your meter.

Q- My meter is not working, do I have to pay to have it changed?

A- No, but if the meter froze and broke there is a charge. If it is simply routine maintenance and or a meter that is failing there is no charge for a replacement.

Q- How can I lower my bill and save water at home?

A- Read the following document:
