Water Supply & Treatment Capital Improvement Projects 2000

Raw Water Pipeline from Mad River Well Field

A 72 inch diameter pipeline project is in progress. This 2 ½ mile pipeline will parallel the existing 84 inch diameter raw (untreated) water pipeline from the Mad River Well Field to the Ottawa Water Treatment Plant. Once installed, the new pipeline can be used to convey well water when the 84 inch diameter pipeline is taken out of service for repair of leaking joints or pipe sections. Water Engineering is responsible for the management and inspection of this project.

Miami Water Treatment Plant – Sand Filter Improvements

Eight rapid sand filters are being rehabilitated at the Miami Water Treatment Plant. Sand and gravel in each filter is being removed. New sand and gravel is being installed to ensure optimum water filtration. Surface wash pipes are also being replaced. Underdrain tiles are being repaired as necessary. Turbidity meters and new valve actuators are also being installed for the effluent of each sand filter. This project will allow compliance with upcoming filtration regulations under the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule and ensure high quality water. New valve actuators have also been installed for the raw (well) water pipelines leading to the lime softening basins.

Electrical Upgrades

Major electrical improvements have been made at the Ottawa Water Treatment Plant and the Lime Recovery Plant. Switch gear has been relocated to a new electric building. New conduits have been installed from this building to all areas of the plant. New motors were installed for the 265 feet rotary kiln, the blowers and the centrifuges. Computers and lines were also installed for the SCADA (Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition) system. Water Supply and Treatment electricians will complete the installation of the SCADA system.

Packed Tower Aeration System Relocation

Three of the six packed tower aeration systems near Huffman Dam will be moved to the Tates Hill area of the Mad River Well Field. These aeration systems are used to remove volatile organic compounds from contaminated groundwater.

Water Treatment Plant Improvements

Chlorine gas scrubbers have been installed at both water treatment plants. In the event of a leak, chlorine gas in the chlorine storage room would be diverted to the gas scrubbers. The activated alumina media in the scrubbers can absorb the entire contents of a 2000 pound chlorine gas cylinder. New chlorine feed systems have also been installed at both water plants. The new feed systems have a vacuum feed from the application point of chlorine all the way to the tank for increased safety. Other projects are completed or in progress. A new 6400 gallon fluoride solution storage tank has been installed at the Miami Water Treatment Plant. Roofing repairs will also take place at the Miami Treatment Plant. Ventilation improvements are being evaluated for the filter gallery at the Ottawa Treatment Plant. A new pumping station and baffles will be installed for the south, treated water reservoir at the Miami Plant. Baffles will also be installed for the east reservoir at the Ottawa Plant.
